Dog Ownership and Registration

Thinking About Owning a Dog?

Bringing a dog into your home is a big commitment — and a rewarding one! Before you welcome a furry friend, there are a few important things to consider to ensure they live a happy, healthy life.

Caring for Your Dog

To keep your dog safe and content, you should:

  • Exercise regularly – Dogs need daily walks to stay healthy and mentally stimulated.
  • Feed a balanced diet – Provide high-quality food suited to your dog’s age, size, and breed.
  • Offer companionship – Dogs are social animals. Loneliness can lead to anxiety or behavioural issues. Time with family, people at the park, or other pets can make a big difference.

If you have concerns about a dog’s welfare, please visit the RSPCA WA website for more information or to report an issue.

Registration, microchipping and sterilisation

Under the Dog Act 1976 all dogs over the age of three months are legally required to:

  • Be microchipped (organised through your local vet)
  • Be registered with the City

While sterilisation isn’t mandatory, it’s highly encouraged. Discounted registration fees apply for sterilised dogs.

For more information or to register your pet, please visit our Dog Registration page or call us on 1300 360 333.

Registration renewal

Dog registrations expire on October 31 each year, we will post you a renewal form in October if your dog is already registered with us. If you do not receive your form please contact us at 9272 0622.

Microchipping

A microchip is an implant placed under your dog's skin by a vet. It is used to provide identification, which will help us get your dog back to you if it gets lost.

Please provide proof that your dog is sterilised and microchipped when registering your pet.

If you are concerned a microchip will affect the health of your dog, please discuss this with your vet.

Sterilisation

The City offers a subsidy for sterilising a registered dog. Please refer to the Sterilisation Subsidy Scheme Information Sheet for information.

You can apply for this subsidy before you sterilise your dog by completing and submitting the Dog Sterilisation Scheme Application and Certificate.
