What has occurred?
At 12.27am on Wednesday 3 September 2025, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of a fire at the Morley Market building on Bishop Street, Morley, which resulted in severe damage to the building and many businesses contained within.
Demolition update
The City of Bayswater issued a demolition permit for the Morley Market building on Friday 26 September. Demolition works are expected to take place over the first week of October, with the following 3-4 weeks involving removal of the debris and clean-up of the site.
Recovery Hub
The City temporarily closed Morley Library to establish a recovery hub where community members impacted by the fire were connected with service providers and representatives to assist them with initial information and advice.
Three drop-in sessions were held from Thursday to Saturday. The Morley Library reopened to the public from 12pm on Monday 8 September.
The City is maintaining a register of affected businesses to keep them informed and provide access to support sevices.
The Ciy is also making a private space available by appointment at Morley Library for meetings between affected business owners and service providers. Appointments can be made by service providers through Morley Library on 9272 0980 for Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am to 1pm over the next three months.
Which businesses have been affected?
The fire primarily impacted businesses located within Morley Market. The premises has been permanently closed, due to advice received from safety assessments. The extent of the damage means the premises are unsafe and unsuitable for use and access.

Insurance
If your property has been damaged, contact your insurer and lodge a claim as soon as possible. For any issues or complaints relating to your claim, refer to your insurer in the first instance, who will address your concern through their internal dispute resolution team. If you do not receive a resolution to your issue, you can then escalate the matter to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) on 1800 931 678, which deals with insurance matters.
