Rough Sleeper Count

On 17 March 2020,  between 1.00am and 3.00am, the City took part in a Rough Sleeper Count, along with other local governments across Perth. We'd like to thank our community for getting behind this initiative, which is very important to us.

The participating local governments were:

  • City of Bayswater
  • City of Perth
  • City of Vincent
  • City of Subiaco
  • City of Fremantle
  • City of Rockingham
  • City of Mandurah

Total rough sleepers counted across these local governments: 479

The total rough sleepers counted in the City of Bayswater was 12 people. Of those, 60% were located in the suburb of Bayswater.

The count was simply a person count, so it did not identify any individual; there was no interaction made with anyone; and assessments or referrals were not conducted.  The City will utilise this data to help inform the development of its Local Homelessness Strategy in 2020/21. We'll also be sharing this information with organisations to help plan support, services and work towards long-term solutions for people sleeping rough.

The City acknowledges that rough sleeping, homelessness and people at risk of homelessness is likely to increase due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are therefore planning a second rough sleeper count to take place in late 2020. More information about the next count will be made available soon.

If you would like more information on the City’s first rough sleeper count, contact us on 9272 0621.
