What is National Recycling Week?
National Recycling Week was started by Planet Ark in 1996 to spread the message about reducing, reusing and recycling. Reducing our waste not only keeps valuable materials out of landfill but it also benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Now, local governments, businesses and schools use National Recycling Week as a way to spark conversations about recycling and other areas of waste management, including reduction and reuse.
National Recycling Week is a well-established and highly regarded annual campaign that continues to educate and encourage behaviour change by:
- Promoting kerbside, industrial and community recycling initiatives.
- Giving people the tools to minimise waste and manage material resources responsibly at home, work and school.
- Supporting efforts within the waste hierarchy, alongside reduce, reuse and composting initiatives.
How can I recycle better at home and at work?
We can be GREAT Sorts by recycling the following five times:
- Paper (not shredded)
- Cardboard
- Plastic bottles and containers
- Glass bottles and jars
- Aluminium and steel cans
Make sure to keep these items loose (not bagged), rinse dirty bottles, jars and containers, and remove lids (put lids in your general waste bin).
Visit the What Goes in Each Bin page for more tips on how to use your recycling, FOGO and general waste bins.
