National Recycling Week

What is National Recycling Week?

National Recycling Week was initially started by Planet Ark in 1996, to spread the message about reduce, reuse, recycle. Reducing our waste not only keeps valuable materials out of landfill it also benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Now, local governments, businesses and schools use National Recycling Week as a way to create conversation about recycling and other areas of waste, including reducing and reusing.

National Recycling Week is a well-established and highly regarded annual campaign, which continues to educate and stimulate behaviour change, by:

  • Promoting kerbside, industrial and community recycling initiatives.
  • Giving people the tools to minimise waste and manage material resources responsibly at home, work and school.
  • Work within the waste hierarchy, alongside reduce, reuse, and composting initiatives

How can I recycle better at home and at work?

We can be GREAT Sorts, by recycling the five:

  • Paper (not shredded)
  • Cardboard
  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Aluminium and steel cans

Keep them loose (no bags), rinse dirty bottles, jars and containers, and lids off (put lids in your general waste bin, or drop off at the Civic Centre for recycling).

Visit the What Goes in Each Bin page for more tips on using your recycling, FOGO and general waste bins.
