In order to operate a food business, all staff who undertake or supervise food-handling activities, must have the necessary skills and knowledge in food safety and food hygiene.
Many food businesses do not realise the cost of training staff in food safety and hygiene is insignificant, compared to the costs to their business if something was to go wrong.
The skills and knowledge of food-handlers are assessed during food premise inspections undertaken by EHOs.
During an inspection, an EHO may require a food-handler to demonstrate their skills or knowledge. This is to help ensure that the food produced is safe for consumption by the public.
Although formal training is not necessarily required, it is recommended as some businesses do not have the time or resources available to conduct in-house training.
