Australia Day Awards Recognise Dedication

Posted on January 27, 2017
The City of Bayswater has recognised the selfless dedication of two of its residents and a community group at an Australia Day ceremony this morning.

Debra Mason was awarded the 2017 Australia Day WA Citizen of the Year Award for her work in running Starting Over Support (SOS).

The charity has helped more than 200 families start over after escaping from domestic violence situations by providing donated furniture and house goods and assisting them to move into independent accommodation.

"Since its inception less than three years ago, hundreds of families and individuals in Perth have been able to establish a home thanks to SOS," Mayor Barry McKenna said.

"Debbie's work in the community has been outstanding, she has helped create a safe place for those facing domestic violence, assisting them in starting new lives."

The 2017 Australia Day WA Senior Citizen of the Year Award went to Terence Gaunt.

Terry is 84 and has been working tirelessly for voluntary organisations in the City for many years.

He is heavily involved with the Maylands Yacht Club, Maylands Historical Society and the North of Perth Music Festival. He was also a City Councillor in the early 90s.

Future Bayswater won the 2017 Australia Day WA Active Citizenship of the Year Award.

The group has been campaigning for a better future for Bayswater and was recognised in particular for their 'Speaker Series' which has run at venues throughout the City bringing together a world class list of speakers.

The speakers have included urban designers, town planners, place making specialists and environment and sustainability specialists.

Future Bayswater encourages residents to consider how Bayswater will look and feel in the future.
