New fitness craze has the City in a Pickle

Posted on June 22, 2017
Pickleball; it's the new fitness craze that’s been sweeping across North America, and now it's coming to the City of Bayswater.

Sure to delight fans of fun and fitness; Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis.

Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, in both a singles and doubles format.

City of Bayswater Mayor Barry McKenna said The RISE was the perfect venue to host this exciting new sport.

"Staying fit and active in the winter months is really important," Mayor McKenna said.

"The great thing about Pickleball is that it's safe for all ages to play from 18 to 80, we encourage fitness fans to come down to The RISE and try it out.

"When winter weather makes it hard to play sport outside in the colder months of the year this is a great way to keep your fitness up, stay social and have some fun while you're doing it.

"We believe sport and recreation builds stronger, healthier, happier and more inclusive communities."

The game originated when American Congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell returned home from a game of golf to find their families sitting around with nothing to do.

With a badminton court in their back yard, but no equipment to play, they improvised and started to play with ping pong paddles and a perforated ball.

It was named Pickleball due to congressman Pritchard's dog 'Pickle' continually interrupting the game by running away with the ball.

Pickleball is played socially every Wednesday at The RISE.

To register for Pickleball or hire a court for casual use, contact The RISE on 9208 2400 or rise@bayswater.wa.gov.au.
