Construction is set to commence on stage one of the City's Maylands Waterland redevelopment, after the site was blessed with a traditional smoking ceremony on Wednesday 16 June.

In recognition of the cultural significance of the area, Balladong, Whadjuk Noongar Representative Vaughn McGuire performed the ceremony, joined by Mayor Dan Bull, Councillors, local residents, contractors and local community groups.

City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the ceremony was an important acknowledgement of the land on which Maylands Waterland will be built, prior to construction taking place.

"Local Whadjuk Noongar leader Barry McGuire, Vaughn McGuire's brother, was instrumental in assisting Josh Byrne and Associates in the detailed design of the site.

"As a result, the balance of Whadjuk Noongar and European heritage linked to the site is reflected in many of the design features.

"Maylands Waterland holds a special place in the hearts of our local community. The redeveloped facility will retain its original character while incorporating a range of new elements based on community feedback.

There will be new family-friendly water play elements, access for all abilities, plenty of shade and links to the river foreshore.

"Stage one of the redevelopment is costed at $3.5 million and will see water play areas, inspired by the Swan River and local native flora and fauna incorporated into the design. It includes splash pad, water creek, wading/splash pool, play areas, accessible toilets and changing rooms, shade sails and structures, grassed areas, community picnic areas including barbecues, provision for mobile catering, fencing and self-closing gates.

Following the appointment of MG Group as the lead contractor for the construction of the new facility, the City, in collaboration with Josh Byrne Associates, is now preparing to start construction in late June.

"I'd like to thank the City staff whose commitment and dedication made reaching this milestone possible," Mayor Bull said. "This is one of the largest projects the City has undertaken and staff have worked extensively with contractors, local Aboriginal groups and government agencies to make it happen.

"We're excited to see progress on the redevelopment of this much-loved community facility and look forward to welcoming families back to play and make new memories this summer."

Construction is anticipated to be completed by November 2021 and the facility open to the community in December 2021.

The redevelopment of Maylands Waterland was fast tracked as part of the City’s $5.09 million local economic and social stimulus package.
