Dog Ownership and Registration

If you are interested in getting a pet dog, there are a few things you need to do before you welcome them into your home.

To keep your dog happy and healthy, you need to:

  • Keep them exercised (dogs need to be walked regularly)
  • Provide a healthy diet
  • Give them companionship (dogs are highly social animals and get lonely easily which can lead to anxiety), this can be through other dogs at the park, people etc.

If you have concerns regarding the welfare of a dog, please visit the RSPCA website.

Registration, microchipping and sterilisation

All dogs over the age of three months must be:

  • Microchipped (through a vet)
  • Registered with the City.

It is not a requirement that your dog is sterilised, however, discounted fees do apply for sterilised animals.

Microchipping

A microchip is an implant placed under your dog's skin by a vet. It is used to provide identification, which will help us get your dog back to you if it gets lost.

Please provide proof that your dog is sterilised and microchipped when registering your pet.

If you are concerned a microchip will affect the health of your dog, please discuss this with your vet.
