Native Plants (Flora)

Native plants evolved to thrive in the low nutrient soils of the Bayswater area and they:

  • Use less water
  • Need less fertiliser
  • Don’t invade other areas of bushland.

Many of our native plants also provide food and habitat for native birds, insects, butterflies and frogs.

Why grow local plants?

It’s important to understand why it’s better to plant local plants before you start planting your garden.

The planting of non-native plants in your garden can lead to a variety of problems. Firstly, they require more water which is an increasing concern in Australia. Secondly, they require more fertiliser which enters groundwater and street drainage, contributing to toxic algal blooms in the Swan River and wetlands.

They can also become environmental weeds as they can spread into native bushland and compete with our native species.

On the other hand, native gardens will give you a colourful garden all year round, as well as reducing your water bill. Feel good about doing something for the environment and plant a native garden.

Local plants

There are a number of species native to the City of Bayswater, they include:

  • Trees
  • Shrubs
  • Perennial herbs
  • Climbers
  • Groundcovers.

These plants are suitable for a range of garden styles including cottage gardens, Mediterranean, water gardens, and Japanese style.

A complete list of local natives, planting tips and species for particular garden styles can be found in our Local Native Plants Guide.

City of Bayswater residents can acquire ten native plants per household each year at a heavily subsidised price through an annual program run by Environment House. For online purchasing, collections and annual program dates see the Plants to Residents page. Stocks are limited.
