NAIDOC Week - author talk with Alf TaylorAn author interview by Dennis Haskill (Australian poet and literary scholar), with Noongar elder, writer, poet and raconteur Alf Taylor. Alf will talk about his journey, his writings and the meaning  for him of NAIDOC Week.
Alf Taylor was  removed from his mother and sent to the New Norcia mission when he was five years old. Whilst there Alf faced many hardships and criticisms including, "he was an ugly black devil who would never make it in life".
Upon leaving the mission Alf worked around Perth and Geraldton as a seasonal farm worker before he joined the Armed Forces.  To  help him overcome his childhood  trauma and life's setbacks Alf took up the pencil and found his voice as a writer and poet
Alf Taylor has  numerous works  (163) that range from his first published book of poems in 1992 to his latest work, a memoir "God, the Devil and Me", released in February 2021.

Film viewing - The art and life of Keith Looby

Archibald Prize winner Keith Looby has won major prizes at home and abroad with his unmistakable artistic style . Looby was born in Sydney in 1940 , entered the National Art School at 15 and emerged with his own unmistakeable style.

Looby has painted on the horrors of colonialism as well as on political and controversial figures and has received Australian painting’s highest plaudits, including the Sulman, Blake and Archibald prizes. Unfortunately his paintings and truth-telling style resulted in him winning very few friends and positioned him as an outsider in the art world.

Looby's works are held by all major Australian public galleries as well as in New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
