The City of Bayswater was proud to accept a Local Government Policy Award for its children’s environmental action program, Green Lab. Hosted by the Public Health Advocacy Institute of Western Australia, the ninth annual awards recognised local governments who implemented strategies and policies that helped to promote and improve public health in the community.

Green Lab is a partnership between the City, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Millennium Kids. The program offered local primary school students the opportunity to gain exposure to real-world sustainability challenges.

More than 100 budding environmentalists spent two days learning from botanists, scientists, and local experts at Lightning Swamp Bushland before pitching their own project ideas to City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull at a special presentation.

Mayor Dan Bull said Green Lab was about empowering young people to make change in the community.

“Our City is committed to conserving our natural environment for future generations, so it made sense to ask young people how they wanted Bayswater to look in 10, 20 and 50 years.

“The students had an impressive understanding of modern sustainability challenges. They understood the need to build roads and infrastructure, but wanted to see this balanced with revegetation and retaining as many trees as possible.

“The City is proud to accept this award. I would like to thank Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Millennium Kids for partnering with us on this important project.”
