Making it easier for the community

Councillor Column
Aug 22 2019

In my eight years as a Councillor I am proud to have advocated for the reduction of red tape.

As part of this, I have championed our Verge Gardening policy, adopted in late 2016 and later our Edible Pocket Garden policy, adopted in 2018. These policies make it easy for our community to create native, water-wise or edible green spaces all over their suburbs.

We’ve also been working to tackle our declining tree canopy by making it simple for our residents to request a street tree on their verge. Councils all over Australia are battling the effects of urban infill and our free street tree program is a great way we can work with our community to make a real difference.

We haven’t stopped there. Over the past 10 months we have reduced our total number of planning policies by 14, with another 14 set to be cut, streamlining by over 50%.

Refining and improving our policies means less bureaucracy, and more time to focus on what matters.

Deputy Mayor, Cr Chris Cornish
