Having a free tree planted on your verge is as easy as completing a one-page form thanks to the City of Bayswater’s Free Street Trees program.

The program is one of the ways the City trying to address its declining tree canopy.

“Our recently released Urban Forrest Strategy put our tree canopy at 13.2 percent. This is something we are trying hard to tackle.

The impacts of urban infill and higher density living can be seen in declining tree canopies across Australia and City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull says the City’s planting program is a practical way the City can address this.

“There are so many benefits that come with planting a street tree. Trees protect homes from wind during winter and have a cooling effect during summer, helping make both your home and street more comfortable as well as reducing reliance on air conditioning and heating.

“They create biodiversity corridors allowing birds and other important species to move freely through our suburbs, improve oxygen quality, remove pollution from the air and can even add value to your home.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for our residents to help us create greener suburbs. By taking us up on this offer, you’re doing a favour for everyone in our community.”

If there’s suitable space on the verge outside your home or business, we can help you select a tree and plant it for you. The City will maintain the tree over its lifetime, all we ask is for you to give it a bit of water to help it through the summer months in its first couple of years.
