Over 100 local primary school students are ready to green our City with their own peer-led sustainability projects after taking part in Bayswater's first Green Lab program. Participants spent two days learning from experts at Lightning Swamp Bushland before pitching their project ideas to City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull at a special presentation on 22 May.

Mayor Dan Bull said he was blown away with the passion and creativity of the students.

"Students developed an impressive understanding of modern sustainability challenges. They acknowledged the need to build roads and infrastructure, but wanted to see this balanced with revegetation and retaining as many trees as possible.

"I heard about ideas for sustainability education initiatives, changes they would like to see to rules and policy, and revegetation projects. These are the change-leaders of our future, and it's really encouraging to see primary school aged children thinking at this level.

"The students will now take their project plans back to school to put them into action over the next twelve months. I look forward to seeing their fantastic ideas come to life.

"Green Lab is another example of Council's commitment to greening our City."

Green Lab is a partnership between the City of Bayswater, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, and Millennium Kids.

Over the two day program, students attended workshops led by botanists, scientists, and local environmental experts. They gained exposure to real-world projects like microclimate mapping, carrying out bird surveys and using robots and drones to gather data.
