Talented local gardeners were recognised at the City of Bayswater’s annual Garden Awards on Friday evening. The awards were presented in four categories: sustainable garden, school garden, verge garden and edible garden.
Now in its 38th year, the awards celebrate the City’s most impressive gardens and the talented people who create them.
Mayor Dan Bull congratulated the winners.
"There are so many inspirational gardens in our community. The annual Garden Awards is a small way we can show our appreciation to residents who contribute to a greener City.
“The City of Bayswater is dedicated to promoting and celebrating sustainable practices not only in our own operations but within our entire community.
"The beautiful gardens featured this year bring joy not only to the people who create them, but to their neighbours and everyone who has the pleasure of walking past them."
Winner of the category for Best Verge Garden, Christine Richardson of Sixth Avenue in Maylands, transformed her verge from weeds to a native paradise.
"I love our native plants – and I also wanted to do something with the weedy desert that was my front verge. It was the worst verge in the street.
"Now it is a very interesting palette of plants and the spring flowers are amazing.
Now retired, Ms Richardson is looking forward to spending more time transforming the rest of her garden.
Winners of each category were as follows:
Best Verge Garden: winner Christine Richardson, runner up Bob and Judy Jones
Best Edible Garden: winner Roxy Lane Community Garden Committee, runner up Susie Bagnato
Best School Garden: winner Bayswater Primary School
Best Sustainable Garden: winner Glenn Cook, runner up Bronwyn Bell
