Stage one of the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre redevelopment is well underway, with the foundations and walls installed for the new courts, aerobics room and change room facilities completed.

The $5.5 million redevelopment includes the construction of two additional basketball courts within a new sports hall, plus new sports floodlighting and pitch realignment on the adjacent rugby fields. As part of stage one, additional toilets and change rooms to service users of the new sports hall will also be installed, and the existing aerobics room to be expanded.

City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said it was great to see the project starting to take shape.

"It's exciting to see construction works kick off, the super structure of the new courts is now in place and upgrades to the rugby fields are nearing completion," he said.

"We're one step closer to welcoming the community to this fantastic sport and recreation facility once the project has been completed later this year.

"The next step will be installing the roof, sealing the structure and completing the internal fit-out of the sports hall.

"The redevelopment of the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre is one of four major projects partly funded by the City's $5.09 million local economic and social stimulus package.

"The redevelopment would not have been possible without the support of the State Government. The Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries provided a $2 million grant through the Community Sport and Recreation Facility Fund, with the support and assistance of the Member for Morley, the Hon Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA."
