The City was pleased to host a visit from Minister for Environment Hon. Reece Whitby MLA this week, who toured the site of the City's new Urban Forest project at Riverside Gardens East.

Earlier this year, the City partnered with Greening Australia to deliver the very first Nature in Cities project in WA.

The Urban Forest project will see an open grassed area between Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary and Memorial Drive transformed into a natural parkland, creating an inviting, shaded area for people to use and enjoy, as well as increasing the City’s tree canopy and biodiversity.

The urban forest will include new and upgraded path networks, picnic nodes, new furniture and amenities, as well as opportunities for interaction, interpretation, education and cultural recognition.

The City has received funding from the State and Federal Governments for the project.

The Federal Government has invested $200,000 via Patrick Gorman MP, Shadow Assistant Minister for Western Australia and Federal Member for Perth.

The Department of Local Government has committed $1,000,000, and through a joint initiative between the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and Water Corporation, an additional $570,000, as part of the Gnangara Waterwise Councils Grants Program, has been secured.

The City also took the opportunity to visit Maylands Lakes with Minister Whitby to detail the water quality issues affecting residents and the City’s approach to tackling these.
