Bayswater locals are encouraged to head outdoors for 20 minutes of birdwatching each day from 16 to 22 October, as part of the Aussie Bird Count.

The annual citizen science activity is run by BirdLife Australia and aims to identify trends in local bird communities and encourage residents to reconnect with the natural environment around them.

Participants can count birds from their backyard, local park or any other area and record the data using the Aussie Bird Count app or website, with a built-in bird finder tool to assist in identifying species.

Data collected will support the City’s biodiversity and conservation efforts and improve the management of natural areas.

This is the second time the City will take part in the Aussie Bird Count. Last year, the City had 154 bird watchers record more than 5,840 birds of 84 different species.

The New Holland Honeyeater was the most frequently sighted bird, with 815 sightings. This species was also the second-most counted bird for the state.

The iconic Willie Wagtail was also commonly reported with a frequency almost twice the state average which can be attributed to the City’s many green open spaces.

Budding twitchers also recorded five threatened species in the City, including the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, Blue-billed Duck, Fairy Tern and Peregrine Falcon.
