'NAIDOC' is the acronym for 'National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee'

In July each year, NAIDOC Week celebrations are held around Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Australians from all walks of life organise and participate in activities to support their local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

NAIDOC Week focuses on a different theme each year, and a nominated city hosts an awards ceremony to recognise outstanding contributions that Indigenous Australians have made to improve the lives of people in their communities.

The Town of Bassendean holds an annual NAIDOC Week Family event. The City of Bayswater has held a stall at the event for a number of years and supported Bassendean in various ways, including providing transport for patrons.

The next NAIDOC event will be held from 7-14 July 2019, with the theme 'VOICE, TREATY, TRUTH - Let's work together for a shared future.'
